Transport Watch UK Focusing on UK's Traffic & Traffic Systems

Train delays

The delays listed here have been provided for us by our supporter, Bob Harrington.  He hopes to maintain the reports on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Many of the delays are due to signal failures and will presumably have effected entire routes.

The source is the National Rail Service Bulletins.  The data covers the working week only and includes only incidents where the overall duration of disruption exceeded two hours.  Delays of less than two hours are also available from the source but are unfortunately not complete.  Hence their inclusion would introduce uncertainty into the presentation we make here. Delays at weekends and on Bank holidays may be much worse.

We comment, with flows as light as those on the railways these rights of way would not require any signals at all, if paved and operated as motor roads managed to avoid congestion.  Indeed, when did we last see a signal on a Trunk road or motorway despite those routes being used 3 to 4 times as intensively as the railways, see facts sheet 1.  Meanwhile the cost of signalling systems on the railways is in the billons of pounds (Network Rail has announced a £2 billion programme for  six major signalling schemes, ref. Rail Professional November 2006, let alone the cost of stopping the SPAD, once costed at £3.6 billion, see facts sheet 10).
